The City of Staples reduced expenditures such as street maintenance, parks and recreation programs, and charitable giving among others to cope with its 2010 aid cuts. The city also lost one full-time position due to aid cuts. The city is still in negotiations with its unions to implement a wage freeze. To further reduce expenditures, the city is conducting a pilot program to shut off street lights and only light intersections and busy streets. On the revenue side, the city’s levy will increase 2.94% in 2010 and new fees, such as a gas franchise fee and electric franchise fee, have been implemented. The city has also reduced its reserve fund, and received its first A- bond rating in the past year.
